Overview

Curriculum

The curriculum that is prepared for the pupils is an efficiently planned and balanced programme taking them through their education from the Nursery and/or Reception class until the end of Year 4 and fully incorporates and implements the Foundation Stage and the National curriculum.

It offers all the necessary elements, with enhancements, that accommodate the pupil’s well-being academically, physically and socially. The values associated with the pupil’s moral, spiritual and cultural development are regarded as being an important foundation upon which to achieve the greatest success.

Throughout the delivery of the curriculum high priority is given to achievement in literacy and numeracy. A range of teaching methods are employed to achieve the necessary learning outcomes.

The Foundation Stage

The period from age 3 to the end of the Reception Year is part of the Early Years Foundation Stage. It is a distinct stage and important both in its own right and also in preparing children for later schooling. In school this covers the Nursery and Reception classes.

The Foundation Stage Curriculum is organised in seven areas of learning:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal and Social Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding of the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

These seven areas help the staff to plan the learning environment, activities and experiences, and provide a framework for the Early Learning Curriculum. Each area of learning has a number of relevant Early Learning Goals. These Goals are targets which all children work towards, and are supported to achieve by the end of the Reception Year. The Early Learning Goals are organised in the same seven areas as the Curriculum. The emphasis is on the child as an active learner, developing skills and knowledge from appropriate experiences. These are provided through structured and purposeful play activities.
