Geography
At South Wellfield First School we are passionate about providing children with key geographical knowledge and fostering an environment where children can use disciplinary skills to become successful geographers. We strive to provide children with a greater understanding of the world and their place within it. Our Geography curriculum is based upon 3 key themes: human geography, physical geography and fieldwork. Our termly units each have a focus of one of these themes which have been carefully planned to enable our children to make connections and comparisons between places and their environmental factors, as well as to ensure progression, both within year groups and across the wider school. Our main aims in Geography are to:
- make global connections to encourage our children to be responsible global citizens
- collect and analyse a range of data to develop locational knowledge of continents, countries and cities, both across the globe and within the UK
- develop contextual knowledge of defining physical and human characteristics of significant places
- develop geographical vocabulary
- make comparisons between places, looking at similarities and differences through comparative language, discussion and clear communication of ideas
- understand the processes that yield key physical and human geographical features of the world and how these can cause change to our world over time

Our Geography curriculum has been divided into key substantive and disciplinary threads which are interwoven throughout each geography unit taught at South Wellfield.

| Well - rounded | Geography allows us to celebrate differences, both culturally and through physical features of places. At South Wellfield First School, we endeavour to expose our children to diverse locations and to use comparison to highlight significant similarities and differences, both through the lens of human and physical geography. This provides our children with a thorough knowledge of our ever changing world and ensures they are well – rounded individuals. | |
| Well - equipped | Through the quality first teaching of key geographical skills within human and physical geography and fieldwork, our children are well – equipped to frame geographical questions, analyse and interpret sources of geographical information and communicate their knowledge in a variety of ways. | |
| Well - read | Reading inspires our teaching of geography through engaging and thought- provoking texts such as ‘Secrets of the Mountain’ and ‘There’s a Rang -Tan in My Bedroom’. Our fiction texts ignite a spark of curiosity in our children where they want to find out more about the world around them. Their curiosity is then complimented through the use of informative, non – fiction texts, carefully used to supplement the teaching of substantive concepts. | |
| Well - connected | The subject of Geography is naturally suited to allow children to be conscious of the wider world and how we, as responsible global citizens, connect with the world on a wider level. This is embedded throughout our carefully planned geography curriculum which explores diverse cultures, global processes and environmental dangers facing our planet. | |
